Harvey Smith, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1906 to Harvey Smith and Minnie Robertson. He attended Boys' High School, Emory University and Oglethorpe University, all of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Marines and ended his duty in 1958. He later moved to New York City where he ran an interior design firm where his specialty was curtains and wallpaper. Smith also owned a hotel in Tortola, British Islands, where he spent a good portion of his time. He was a member of Atlanta society when he resided in the city and was friends with Margaret Micthell. Smith was also very interested in his family genealogy and saved all of his mother's research regarding this family history as well as the history of Chambers County, Alabama, where the Smith family originated. Harvey M. Smith, Jr. died in 1994.
