The bulk of the material in this collection is related more or less directly to Dr. Newell's professional activities and administrative duties and responsibilities. However, a portion of the collection records his involvement in church and community affairs, such as his work as editor of the Mormon journal, Dialogue, and activities on behalf of Deep Springs College in California. Collection includes correspondence, memoranda, minutes, news clippings, reports, and other material transferred to the University Records Center by the Office of the Dean of LIberal Education, 1980-1990.

Jackson Newell received his Ph. D. from Ohio State University in 1972. He held concurrent appointments in the Graduate School of Education and central administration at the University of Utah for more than fifteen years, serving as Professor of Educational Administration from 1974-1998, Dean of Student Affairs from 1974 to 1978 and Director and Dean of Liberal Education from 1974 to 1990.
