This collection of family papers consists of correspondence from 1841 to 1864, and Civil War diary and discharge papers from the war. Several of the letters were written by family members, Mary Miller and Sarah Dougdale. The Civil War letters were written to West's wife Sarah.

The bulk of the collection was written by Alfred West just prior to, and during the Civil War. In 1860 he was a musician who played in a band in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other Sourthern cities before the war began. He later was a musician in the Union Army. Although West lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, many of the Civil War Documents pertain to Kentucky. West's heirs later moved to Northern Kentucky.
