Variant namesThe bulk of the collection was written by Alfred West just prior to, and during the Civil War. In 1860 he was a musician who played in a band in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other Sourthern cities before the war began. He later was a musician in the Union Army. Although West lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, many of the Civil War Documents pertain to Kentucky. West's heirs later moved to Northern Kentucky.
