William A. McClain papers, 1927-1989 (bulk 1946-1989).

Contains correspondence, speeches, certificates, diplomas, scrapbooks, clippings and periodicals, etc., primarily from 1946 to 1989 concerning McClain's personal and professional life. Includes materials dealing with Wittenberg University, University of Michigan Law School, Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, Sigma Pi Phi, and the offices of city solicitor and Common Pleas Court judge. The collection also reflects his involvement with the Masons, specifically with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, the Ohio Council of Deliberation, the United Supreme Council, and the Progressive Masonic and Order of Eastern Star Conference of Ohio. In addition, there are court cases which he represented before the Supreme Court of Ohio, several issues of BOULEĢ JOURNAL, and a manuscript volume assembled around 1965 by junior high school students with short biographies of 34 Cincinnati African-Americans.

Attorney William A. McClain was Cincinnati's city solicitor from 1963 to 1972, the first African-American to hold such a high municipal legal office. He served as Hamilton County Common Pleas Court judge from 1975 to 1976 and as Municipal Court judge from 1976 to 1980.
