Theodore Dehon Jervey papers, 1871-1892.

Papers consist of a letterpress copybook and financial records. Letterpress copybook (1882-1892) contains copies of business and official letters from Jervey concerning phosphate shipments and other affairs of the Coosaw Mining Co.; the marketing of a cotton harvester machine by the Mason Harvester Co.; investments in the Charleston Mining, Manufacturing and Improvement Co. and the Blacksburg Land and Lumber Co.; rental of Big Murphy's Island for R.H. Lucas; tax collections; and other matters. Correspondents include John Porterfield, Edward H. Barnwell, James B. Heyward, and others. Also included is a copy of a letter (1886) responding to public objections in Newberry, S.C. to Jervey's appointment of black Democrat Marc Green as watchman of the Charleston Customs House. Financial records (1871-1892) chiefly consist of receipts (1876-1877) of Jervey's contributions to the Charleston Democratic Executive Committee. There are also accounts for investments and receipts.

Charleston, S.C. businessman. Jervey was a member of the mercantile firm of William C. Bee & Company, president of the Mason Harvester Company, and president of the Miners' and Merchants' Bank of Charleston. He was also U.S. Customs Collector of the Port of Charleston from 1885 to 1889. In 1847 Jervey married Ann Hume Simons; she died in 1862, and in 1870 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Heyward Trapier, widow of General James H. Trapier.
