Robert F.W. Allston papers, 1817-1868.

Papers consist of correspondence, estate papers, plantation papers, including slave lists and account books for Matanzas (Chicora Wood) Plantation, and memorandum books concerning Nightingale Hall, Waverly, and other plantations, financial records, journals, writings, and other items. Allston's correspondence is with his wife, Adele Petigru Allston, their children, and other members of the Allston and allied families, as well as political leaders, factors, and friends. Letters from Allston, written from West Point, from Alabama during his military service, from Columbia (S.C.) during legislative sessions, and elsewhere, discuss matters such as family and business concerns, plantation life, estates, slavery, the Civil War, education at West Point, the Catawba Indians, and Allston's legislative and executive affairs. Business correspondence is mainly with factors regarding the sale of rice and slaves, shipments of plantation supplies, hiring of freedmen, agreements to supply rice to the C.S.A. Army, and other matters.
