James Reid Pringle papers, 1745-1840 (bulk 1800-1850).

Papers consist of legal documents, financial records, correspondence (mostly business letters, but a few discussing family matters and politics), estate records, plantation papers, records of the Charleston Custom House, and other items. Correspondents include Winfield Scott, John B. Lynch, and Joel R. Poinsett. Plantation papers include receipts, bonds, correspondence, slave records (bills of sale, lists, an appraisal, and a slave mortgage), accounts, and other items pertaining to Rest Park and North Santee plantations. Included are letters from overseer James K. Munnerlyn regarding plantation affairs. Estate records for the estates of William Stephen Bull, Elizabeth M. Freeman (aunt of James Reid Pringle), Susannah McPherson, James Reid Pringle and others include accounts, wills, receipts, and other items. Financial records include bonds and receipts, as well as accounts pertaining to Pringle's guardianship of the children of Dr. John B. Lynch. Materials pertaining to the Charleston Custom House include Pringle's certificate of appointment as Collector of the Customs (1828), official correspondence, and receipts for freight, wine, and unclaimed goods. A group of legal documents (1822-1828), with related correspondence and accounts, pertain to a dispute over the estate of Dr. Edward Jenkins and a lawsuit between Elizabeth Bull (aunt of James Reid Pringle) et al. and John Jenkins Rowland Prichard. Other items include an indenture (1745) of William Bull, Pringle's military commissions (1799,1801), and posthumous tributes (1840) to James Reid Pringle.
