Lance Lambert papers, 1754-1832 (bulk 1784-1832).

Papers consist of receipts, bonds, legal documents including powers of attorney, a deed of gift, and a marriage settlement, a bill for not supplying slaves for roadwork, estate papers, family correspondence, and other items. Papers pertaining to the estate of Lambert Lance (1758-1804) include his wills and accounts for groceries, drygoods, and other expenses. A deed of settlement (1810) of Daniel Huger and his wife Sarah Louisa Huger conveys ownership of slaves to Dr. John Parker Gough and includes a list ("schedule") of slaves with their descriptions. Family correspondence includes a letter (1817) from Daniel Huger to "Harvey" (Maurice Harvey Lance) concerning Huger's deep sorrow over his son's death, Huger's faith, resignation to the will of God, and Christian hope. There are also handwritten copies (1801) of personal letters of Lambert Gough Lance (1785-1801), including one regarding his decision to study law. Other items include an opinion (1819) of Robert Y. Hayne regarding a Lance family estate dispute, and a Lance family genealogy (n.d.).
