Porcher family papers, 1740-1967 (bulk 19th century).

Papers consist of correspondence, writings, land and legal papers, commonplace books, genealogical material, school papers, estate records, and other items. Included are the papers of Frederick A. Porcher (1809-1888), Walter Peyre Porcher (1858-1919), Francis Peyre Porcher (1824-1893), and Virginia Leigh Porcher (1866-1940), and a commonplace book of Samuel Peyre (1715-1758). Papers of Anne Alston Porcher consist of diaries, notebooks, and a scrapbook. Diaries (1898-1932) concern Porcher's life at Pinopolis (S.C.), Flat Rock (N.C.), Rock Hill (S.C.), Greenville (S.C.), as a student at Winthrop College, and her friends, family, and social life. Included is a travel diary (1907) of Porcher's trip to Europe which also contains drawings, clippings, letters, photographs, postcards, and other mementos. A notebook (1906-1907) contains a travel itinerary and notes on expenses and places of interest. Another notebook (1909) contains notes on palmistry and includes clippings with diagrams of palm lines. Scrapbook (1893) mostly contains prints and engravings depicting landscapes, famous persons, domestic and religious scenes, horses, and other subjects; there are also pencil drawings and watercolor paintings. Papers (1936-1967) of Louise de Cherigny Porcher mainly consist of notebooks, photocopies of clippings, lists, notes, photographs, advertisements, and other items pertaining to silverware, china, and silversmiths of Charleston, S.C.
