This collection contains diaries (1930-1975), which include drawings, paintings, clippings and ephemera; biographical information, clippings, correspondence, high school annuals, art works, Christmas cards, articles, photographs, scrapbooks, and sketches. These papers document the experiences of the Raynesses and include diaries and photographs concerning their life together; Wallace and Rayness family letters (from the Civil War and World War I eras), samples of their art work, and a number of sketches of the Iowa State campus for various editions of Campus Sketches, published by the Iowa State University Press.

Charles Atherton Cumming was born in Knox County, Iowa to George Paxton Cumming and Eliza Atherton. He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Acad́émie Julien in Paris, France. He was an artist and an educator and held an early faculty position in the Department of Art at Cornell University. He founded the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines, Iowa in 1895. Artists. Gerard and Velma Rayness were married in 1929 in Des Moines, Iowa and they moved to Ames, Iowa in the 1930s. They had been art students of Charles Atherton Cumming and taught at his art school.
