Papers include: family, business, and legal papers; typescript copies of family correspondence (1807-1843), including letters between John McLoughlin, John McLoughlin Jr., David McLoughlin, Malcolm Fraser, Alexander Fraser, John G. McTavish, William McGillivray, and George Simpson; also includes genealogical data. Other materials include: an interview of Eloisa (McLoughlin) Rae Harvey with Hubert H. Bancroft; David McLoughlin's papers (1855-1928), including biographical data and correspondence; a survey of Joseph McLoughlin's land claim; wills of William Glen Rae and John Rae; the marriage settlement between Eloisa (McLoughlin) Rae Harvey and Daniel Harvey; and the overland journey reminiscence of Theodore Wygant. Papers of John McLoughlin include: correspondence (ca. 1825-1855); land claim documents; Hudson's Bay Company papers; and photostats of estate papers. Also included is McLoughlin's statement to the Hudson's Bay Company (ca. 1845) and a photocopy of his letterbook (1847-1848). This collection also contains miscellaneous ephemera, biographical data, and material from Burt Brown Barker.

Dr. John McLoughlin was born October 19, 1784 in Riviere du Loup, Lower Canada, to John and Angelique (Fraser) McLoughlin. He married Marguerite (Wadin) McKay around 1812. In 1824 he was appointed chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company Columbia district. At Fort Vancouver he maintained good relations with the native people and assisted missionaries and immigrants that settled in the area.
