Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. Dr. John McLoughlin was born October 19, 1784 in Riviere du Loup, Lower Canada, to John and Angelique (Fraser) McLoughlin. He married Marguerite (Wadin) McKay around 1812. In 1824 he was appointed chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company Columbia district. At Fort Vancouver he maintained good relations with the native people and assisted missionaries and immigrants that settled in the area.
