Dr. John McLoughlin was born October 19, 1784 in Riviere du Loup, Lower Canada, to John and Angelique (Fraser) McLoughlin. He married Marguerite (Wadin) McKay around 1812. In 1824 he was appointed chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company Columbia district. At Fort Vancouver he maintained good relations with the native people and assisted missionaries and immigrants that settled in the area. He was forced to retire in 1846 and moved to his land claim in Oregon City, where he died in 1857. The McLoughlin's daughter, Eloisa, married William Glen Rae in 1838. After Rae committed suicide in 1845, Eloisa moved back to live with her family. She married Daniel Harvey (1850) in Oregon City. She died in Portland in 1884. Her daughter, Margaret Glen Rae, married Theodore Wygant in 1858. Their daughter, Maria Louise (Lou), never married. Another daughter, Nellie Amelia, married Martin Winch. They had one son, Simeon Reed Winch.
