Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro, originator of the Sutro Tunnel in Nevada and well-known figure in San Francisco, born of Jewish parents in 1830 at Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany, left school at sixteen, but continued his education by reading voraciously. From his father, a cloth manufacturer, Sutro learned factory management. Attorney, amateur historian. Born in Oakland and educated at University of California. Practiced law in San Francisco (1931-1942). Joined Immigration and Naturalization Service, serving principally in Sacramento (1943-1946). In service he travelled up and down Sacramento Valley interviewing citizenship applicants. Returned to private law practice in Sacramento (1946-1977). President of Sacramento Historical Society (1960) and Conference of California Historical Societies (1965). Sought in essays...
