Boxes 1-6 contain transcripts of articles drawn from 19th c. California, Nevada and Oregon newspapers pertaining to copper mining, politics, transportation, religion, biography and other topics. Box 7 contains transcripts of book and periodical excerpts on same topics. Box 8 contains correspondence, notes and other personal papers of Retha P. Smith and her husband, Leroy D. Smith. Boxes 9-10 contain unusual Nevada and Oregon newspapers.

Homer Smith (1896-) was born in Illinois. His father's family were builders and his mother's family were farmers; he was an architect and a farmer. In 1957, he established a homestead on the Kenai Peninsula. His experiences there prompted him to write two books on the difficulties of horticulture in the 49th state.
