East Orange (N.J.) glass plate negative collection, 1890-1919.

The images in this collection document public events, architecture, and education in Essex County, New Jersey and elsewhere. Some of the plates were created by Frank P. Jewett Studios in East Orange. Most of the photographers, however, are unknown. Subjects include mills, family portraits, expositions and fairs, the 250th Anniversary of Newark (1916) celebration, insurance companies, railroads (Lehigh Valley Railroad and Central Railroad of New Jersey), churches and synagogues, rivers, bridges, recreation, schools (including a nursing school and a class for African-Americans at the YMCA), sports clubs and events, libraries, the Orange Centennial Parade (1907), Edison Works, department stores, and Llewellyn Park in West Orange. Also includes images of President William H. Taft in Orange (1912) and Theodore Roosevelt at Sea Girt with Governor Franklin Murphy (ca. 1904). Towns and places represented include: Ayers Cliff, Bloomfield, Delaware Water Gap, East Orange, Easton (P.A.), Glen Ridge, Greenwood Lake, Jersey City, Maplewood, Montclair, Morristown, New York City, Newark, North Branch, Niagra Falls (N.Y.), Orange, Raritan, Rocky Hill, Somerville, South Orange, Sterling Forest (N.Y.), Summit, and West Orange. Most of the negatives have photographic print versions in the New Jersey Places Photographs and Prints collection (MG 1361).
