In 1861, the United States federal government approved the Morrill Act which set aside land in each state for the founding of public higher education. The Gamma Theta local fraternity began at the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in 1907. This local fraternity was established as the Delta Delta chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega national fraternity in 1917. The College became the University of New Hampshire in 1923.
