The diaries of Phil S. Howes span virtually all of the writer's adult life, from his student days at Norwich University through his many years as a Montpelier resident. Howes was employed by National Life Insurance Company, was active in civic affairs, and served as secretary to the Vermont Historical Society for 25 years.

Phil Sheridan Howes, son of Edward Helon Howes and Susan Putney, was born July 28, 1875, in Northfield, Vermont. After graduation from Norwich University in 1896, he served in the Spanish American War. Howes worked briefly in Northampton, Massachusetts, before he joined the actuarial department of National Life in 1901.
