Phil Sheridan Howes, son of Edward Helon Howes and Susan Putney, was born July 28, 1875, in Northfield, Vermont. After graduation from Norwich University in 1896, he served in the Spanish American War. Howes worked briefly in Northampton, Massachusetts, before he joined the actuarial department of National Life in 1901. He and his wife Alice Lunnie (? - March 1940) were married on November 16, 1898, in Northfield. They lived briefly in Northfield and in 1902 moved to Montpelier. They had two children, Harold Lunnie (July 30, 1900 -?) and Mildred Burr (May 18, 1902 - July 14, 1994).
