Contains telegram, 7 Sept. 1860, on letterhead of the Newport Telegraph Co., directing "Asst Surgeon Crawford" to report for duty at Fort Moultrie by direction of the Secretary of War [John Buchanan Floyd]; letter, 15 July and , Huntsville, Ala., to Gov. [Robert Kingston] Scott, in Columbia, [S.C.], requesting information on correspondence with Gov. [F.W.] Pickens for "authentic data" on the defense and fall of Fort Sumter, 1860-1861; and letter, 4 Aug. 1869, to Mrs. F[rancis] W[ilkinson] Pickens, in Edgewood, [S.C.], requesting permission to use the papers of her late husband, F.W. Pickens. Three letters, 4 Jan. 1883, 9 Apr. [18]85, and 12 May [18]86, written by Crawford from York, Pa., Washington D.C., and New York City to "My dear friend C" and to two unknown individuals requesting information re the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter and announcing the publication of his book The Genesis of the Civil War: the Story of Sumter, 1860-1861. Letter, 15 Apr. [18]85, Washington, [D.C.], to Gen. [P.G.T.] Beauregard, expressing regret on missing him while in New York, seeking information as to location of negatives of 30 photographs taken after the first bombardment of Fort Sumter that Beauregard mentioned in one of his reports. Also including newspaper clipping, "Preservation of a Hittite Inscription" [1886], re Crawford's discovery of Hittite writing on a stone block used in construction of a mosque in the town of Aleppo, Syria; although the carving was subsequently destroyed, the article credits Crawford with completion of a transcription that he donated to the Biblical Archaeolgical Society of Great Britain in 1884.

Crawford was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1846 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1850. He joined the U.S. Army as an assistant surgeon in 1851 and served in that capacity for ten years. Crawford was the surgeon on duty at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, during the Confederate bombardment in 1861, which represented the start of the Civil War.
