Surveys of and receipt for surveying woodlot land owned by John Hosmer and John B. Moore, [1850]-1851.

Two manuscript Thoreau surveys (ink on paper, with pencil additions) of woodlot land in Concord, plus Thoreau's receipt for payment from the Abel Moore estate for surveying work. The two surveys bear no captions and are identifiable only by comparison with an item in the collection of Thoreau surveys bequeathed by Sophia Thoreau (Henry's sister) to the Concord Free Public Library (1876) and by referring to Thoreau's notes in his manuscript field book, also in the Concord Free Public Library. The survey collection item--a less finished version (primarily in pencil) of one of the. (Cont.) Moore estate surveys--is labelled (in Thoreau's hand) on the verso: "Moore & Hosmer woodlot by Walden." The field notes for this survey read: "John Moore & John Hosmer's woodlots--on and near the railroad in Walden Woods ... winter of '49-50." Thoreau's receipt for $1.50 (dated 1851 Jan. 22) is made out to "N. Brooks, Executor to A. Moore's Estate." John Brooks Moore was a son of Abel Moore, who was associated with John Hosmer in the sale of standing and cut wood. Abel Moore died in 1848; Concord lawyer Nathan Brooks administered his estate.
