Materials relating to student life at Wofford College document attendance of Tarrant, 1856-1858, and his brother, Sumter Tarrant, ca. 1860; consisting of presentations, essays, and broadsides of R.B. Tarrant documenting student activites, including pocket diary, 1856, with observations re school life; Sumter Tarrant letter, 16 Feb. 1860, Wofford College, to R.B. Civil War items relating to Confederate military service of Sumter Tarrant include letter, 8 July 1861, from Camp Walker, Manassas Junction, Va, expressing patriotic fervor for Confederate cause; letter, 28 July 1861, reviewing his regiment's participation in the battle of Manassas, which included being fired upon by two Mississippi regiments; material from South Carolina includes pocket diary, 1860-1863, containing a record of services conducted at various churches and lists of names. Other items include letter, 1 Feb. 1864, A.B. Stephens, James Island, S.C., to R.B. Tarrant, reporting that he was serving as chaplain to the 11th Regiment, S.C. Volunteers, and giving an account of a revival of religion among the soldiers. Post-Civil War items documenting Tarrant's work as a minister and planter include a labor agreement, 10 June 1865, with African-American freedmen for work on his plantation; and 3 documents, 30 Aug., 19 Sept., and 23 Sept. 1872, recording sales of his cotton by Charleston factor A.J. Salinas. Collection also includes covenant and minutes of Beulah Church, 1806-1807, recording acceptance of Elizabeth Dubose and Martha Aikins for membership; undated ciphering book of Jacob Stroman [ca. 1800?], with calculations for converting currencies of various states, regions, and countries; letter, 7 Nov. 1840, Thomas W. Radcliffe, Charleston, S.C., to Mrs. Sarah Howell (Columbia, S.C.) re grim economic situation in Charleston; and 8 photographs, including images of Jesse T. Reese.
