Shortess, Robert, 1797-1878.

In 1839, Robert Shortess traveled to Oregon from Illinois and was soon converted to Christianity at the Willamette Mission. Later, he served as a member of the general committee in Oregon's Provisional Government and eventually settled near Astoria. Joseph Lane was born in North Carolina December 14, 1801, and moved to Kentucky when he was three years old. At age fourteen Lane moved away from his family to Indiana. At the age of twenty-one Lane married Mary Hart Polly. The couple had eight children. From 1822 to 1846, Lane served in the Indiana State Legislature. Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. From 1859 to 1861, he served as mayor of the newly incorporated town of Olympia, Washington.
