Iowa State University first established coursework in "domestic economy" in 1872. The first instructor was Mary B. Welch, wife of University President, Adonijah Welch. In 1875 the Department of Domestic Economy was formed. It was among the earliest domestic economy departments in the United States. Home economics college dean, teacher education expert. Genevieve Fisher was Dean of the Iowa State College Division of Home Economics, 1927-1944. Prior to her deanship, she was a home economics instructor, 1914-1919. In 1919 Fisher became employed by the U.S. Board of Vocational Education in Washington, D.C. (1919-1922). She then worked at the Carnegie Institute of Technology at Pittsburgh, directing the home economics education program for teachers-in-service for western Pennsylvania. ...
