This collection contains correspondence, surveys, conference materials, programs, reports, newsletters, agendas, and printed materials. The ISU-related records series contains Trahanovsky's class evaluations for her Chemistry classes, faculty surveys, curriculum workshop materials, information concerning the status of gender equity on campus, and the activities of the Committee for Women in Science and Engineering. The American Chemical Society records series includes publications, meetings, agendas, and minutes that document the operation of the organization. Trahanovsky was involved with several committees, including the Committee on Economic Status and the Subcommittee on Employment. The work of these committees as well as their compiled information concerning their respective subjects makes up part of this series. The remainder of the series pertains to Trahanovksy's work as Chair and as a member of committees, with the Women Chemists Committee. There are agendas, minutes, correspondence, and a large number of printed articles and brochures documenting other scientific organizations and the status of women as well as records about the employment of women in chemistry, the Lilly Awards, and the Garvan Medal, chemistry's top honor for women. The last series, Iota Sigma Pi, illustrates Trahanovsky's work on a national and local level with the chemistry honorary society. Her records include copies of The Iotan, histories of the group, convention programs, handbooks for officers, and records for the local Aurum Chapter at Iowa State University.

National organization. The Iota Sigma Pi is a national honorary society for women in chemistry. The first chapter in the country was started in 1902, and the Iota Sigma Pi was organized on a nation-wide basis in 1916. Each chapter is named after a chemical element such as nitrogen or palladium. Chemistry professor. Kathleen Desmond Trahanovsky was born 19 September 1939 and received her A.B. (1960) in Chemistry from Emmanuel College in Boston and her M.S. (1962) and Ph.
