Everett B. Sackett served the University of New Hampshire from 1938 to 1969 as a professor, Registrar, Dean of Student Administration and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. He was commissioned by the University to write a history of the institution in 1973. The book that was produced is called "New Hampshire's University: the Story of a New England Land Grant College". In 1861, the United States federal government approved the Morrill Act which set aside land in each state for the founding of public higher education. In 1862, the New Hampshire state legislature accepted the grant of 80,000 acres of public lands on which to set up a university. It was not until 1866 however, that the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was incorporated by the state legislature.
