The accession consists of the correspondence, agenda, minutes and other records of the S.I.O. Long Range Planning Committee. This was an S.I.O. Staff Council ad hoc committee appointed by SIO Director William A. Nierenberg on November 15, 1965 "to prepare a long range plan for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to replace the long range plan approved by the Regents in 1962." The committee was chaired by William Van Dorn. Members included Robert S. Arthur, Jeffery Dean Frautschy, and Richard Rosenblatt. Chairman William Van Dorn stated the objectives of the committee on 6 December 1965: "to attempt to determine present and future SIO needs in major capital improvements, thorough review of previously submitted items and consideration of additional improvements indicated by present and projected growth of SIO." The committee conducted periodical surveys of SIO space and evaluated, ranked and supported building plans.
