Correspondence, literary manuscripts and notes, card files, family papers, financial documents, printed material, and photographs from the Spells careers and lives. Subgroup I consists of materials concerning both J.R. and Lota Spell. It includes correspondence about many literary figures and various of the Spells' activities, notably the International Institute of Ibero-American Literature; writings undertaken in collaboration or on shared topics, such as Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza; card files pertaining to their research and publications; items relating to their activities at UT; family papers; financial documents; and assorted materials such as notebooks, travel diaries, and clippings. Most photographs are from the series, Family Papers. Subgroup II is formed of J.R. Spell's manuscripts and notes for publications about José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Eusebio Vela, Spanish-American theater and fiction, and numerous articles. Subgroup III comprises Lota Spell's papers and contains manuscripts and notes for her works on Samuel Bangs, Pedro de Gante, Research materials for Latin American studies at UT, and musical topics, including the memoirs of musician Horace Clark; correspondence, printed material, and teaching materials from music activities and associations (Mary Dunn is well represented), including the Texas Music Teachers Association, Austin District Music Teachers' Association, Texas Federation of Music Clubs, and University Interscholastic League; and correspondence and research materials from the Texas Research Bureau.
