TFMC was organized on November 12, 1915 in Brownwood, Texas, under the leadership of Louise Pace, chairwoman of the Music Department of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs. Lucil Manning Lyons became the first president of TFMC, which originally comprised 22 Texas music clubs. The first annual convention was held in Waco in May 1916. By 1928, 320 clubs had joined the federation. TFMC also began publishing its bulletin, Texas Music News, in 1928. During its first thirty years, the organization flourished, contributing to national war efforts during the two world wars, funding radio programs and music education in schools during the Great Depression, supporting music appreciation campaigns, and sponsoring musical outreach and charitable work. Following the World War II era, TFMC’s membership and activities decreased significantly.
