Nathaniel Julius Reich was born in Sarvar, Hungary in 1882. He was the son of Rabbi Wilhelm Reich, who gave him his early rabbinical training. Reich received his Ph.D. in 1904 from the Lehranstaltfur Orientalische Sprachen in Vienna. specialization in Semitics, Paleography, Papyrology, Oriental history, and Egyptology.
