Reich, Nathaniel Julius, 1882-1942

Nathaniel Julius Reich was born in Sarvar, Hungary in 1882. He was the son of Rabbi Wilhelm Reich, who gave him his early rabbinical training. Reich received his Ph.D. in 1904 from the Lehranstaltfur Orientalische Sprachen in Vienna.

specialization in Semitics, Paleography, Papyrology, Oriental history, and Egyptology. The focus of Reich's career became Egyptology, but he was perhaps best known as a linguist.

Reich emigrated to the United States in 1921. He was appointed Assistant Curator of the Egyptian Section of the University Museum at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1924, a position in Egyptology was specifically created for him.

College in Philadelphia. He held this position until his death in 1943. He was a prolific author, and established the short-lived periodical Mizraim in 1933. He was involved in several professional, Jewish, and social organizations, and

many notable associates in the fields of Egyptology and the study of language. Reich died at the age of 61 on October 5, 1943.
