Letters to Amos Starr Cooke from several Methodist missionaries in Oregon concerning missionary operations, crop failure, antagonism with Catholics, and the death of Rev. Cyrus Shepard. Correspondents include Ira Leonard Babcock (one letter), Lewis H. Judson (two letters), William W. Raymond (five letters), and Alvan F. Waller (three letters). One letter is addressed to Mrs. Cooke.

Alvan F. Waller, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born in Abington, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1808. In 1833 he married Elpha White, with whom he had three children. In 1840 he came to Oregon on the ship Lausanne and established a mission at Oregon City with the assistance of Hudson's Bay Company factor Dr. John McLoughlin and missionary Jason Lee. Amos Starr Cooke was born in Maine on January 8, 1816. After attending a meeting at which Rev. Jason Lee was lecturing, he was inspired to emigrate to Oregon. In 1839, Cooke and a group of 19 others set out for the region. He eventually took out a land claim in Yamhill County and married Mary Francis Scott at Lafayette, Oregon. Cooke was a Methodist layman with close ties to the Methodist missions. Amos Starr Cooke died on Feburary 3, 1895. From the description of Letters, 1840-1844....
