Papers of Weaver-Brady families, 1824-1878.

Include the business correspondence and papers, 1824-1878, of William Weaver and his nephew, Daniel C.E. Brady pertaining to their operations at Bath Iron Works, Buffalo Forge, Etna Furnace, and subsidiary organizations, Lydia Furnace, Emma Mines, Liberty Furnace, Potosi Mines, and a grist mill, Spring Mills, located in Rockbridge, Rockingham, and Botetourt, Va. counties. The collection presents a detailed picture of the use of slave and hired slave labor in the manufacture of pig and forged iron. Include correspondence, primarily of William Weaver, Daniel C.E. Brady, James D. Davidson, Greenlee Davidson, John Doyle, Charles K. Gorgas, Jordan, Davis, & Co., Henry A. McCormick, William W. Rex, Richmond and Lynchburg, Va. merchants, other iron works owners, and slave hiring agents. Also include ledgers, daybooks, journals, time books, records of free and slave labor, provision account books, cashbooks, farm journals, receipts, bills, legal papers, slave account books, land assessments and journals kept by Daniel C.E. Brady. Some correspondence, 1861-1863, pertains to the difficulties, arising during the Civil War, such as the demand for iron, inability to fill orders, impressment of iron, filling orders for Confederate government, and opinion and news of the Civil War. Also includes appraisements, 1863, of estates of William Weaver; and voting registration, 1870-1875, at Natural Bridge, Va. with Afro-American voting information.
