Local 887 succeeded UAW-CIO Local 683 as the bargaining agent for North American Aviation workers. Local 683 had been formed in May of 1941 as an amalgamated local to represent aircraft workers in the Los Angeles area. In June of the same year 11,000 North American Aviation workers staged an unauthorized strike.
