Local 887 succeeded UAW-CIO Local 683 as the bargaining agent for North American Aviation workers. Local 683 had been formed in May of 1941 as an amalgamated local to represent aircraft workers in the Los Angeles area. In June of the same year 11,000 North American Aviation workers staged an unauthorized strike. In order to maintain defense production the army seized the plant, and the International Union revoked the Charter of Local 683.

After the workers returned to their jobs, the National Defense Mediation Board recommended the workers' demands be met and subsequently the National War Labor Board granted the Union's request and a new charter was issued establishing UAW Local 887. Local 887, covering many of North American Aviation's branches in California, became the largest local in Region 6.
