Journals contain an account of Joseph Daniel Aiken's trip to Europe. The first volume (May through August 1849) begins as Aiken embarks at Boston (Mass.) on board the steamer Cambria for the journey to Liverpool, England. After nearly two months touring Great Britain, he and his party leave for Antwerp (Belgium). They then tour the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The second volume (August through September 1849) continues their journey through Switzerland, Italy, and France. During their stay in Florence (Italy) Aiken visits the studio of Hiram Powers, and views the unfinished [marble] statue of "the cast iron man," John C. Calhoun, intended for the City of Charleston, South Carolina.
