Letters of John Letcher, 1853 and 1859.

On 1853 March 9 Letcher writes to William L. Marcy, Secretary of State, unofficially recommending Gen. Douglas B. Layne for Marshall of the Western District of Virginia. In two letters to unidentified recipients, 1859 May 26 and October 6, Letcher discusses the results of the gubernatorial primary in Rockbridge County, Va.; describes Henry Alexander Wise's opposition to his election; corrects his correspondent's belief that [R.M.T.] Hunter was indifferent; and mentions his health.
