Include letters, 1862-1864, of Erastus "Ras" Hoskins to his wife, Lou Pinkston Hoskins, while stationed in Mississippi, concerning Confederate and Union movements there, Union actions against Vicksburg, Miss., Confederate cavalry raids, a battle near Mechanicksburg, Miss., and the soldiers' pay. Also concerns camp life, sickness and Hoskins' slave at camp, Union parole policy, his own parole, uniforms, furloughs, Confederate taxes and draft, Union politics, farm management, his back pain, purchasing land, finances, care of slaves, and family news. Also include six letters, 1863-1864, from James Preston Pinkston to his sister Lou Pinkston Hoskins concerning Union army movements in Tennessee and Georgia, his opinions about Generals Braxton Bragg and Joseph E. Johnston, and camp life. Additional family correspondence, 1864, concerns marriage, sickness, Union capture of two family members, the devastation of a relative's farm, slaves' leaving the farm, and an opinion that extensive financial support for the Confederate States Army should exempt one from the draft.
