Oliver Henry Perry was Secretary of the State in 1854, representative from the town of Fairfield in the General Assembly on several occasions between 1847 and 1864, and Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1859 and 1860. The papers include family and political correspondence, statistical returns of Sabbath schools in Fairfield County in 1858 and financial records. The latter deal with rentals, investments, the bills for building his home in 1843 and two bills for 58 books purchased in 1844. Perry's nephew, Samuel Whittemore Hitchcock, wrote him over a 27 year period, much of which was spent in France and Switzerland. Artist George Hitchcock, son of Samuel's brother Charles, is often mentioned. Other correspondents include Phineas Taylor Barnum, William Buckingham, James Dixon, Henry Dutton, Elihu Geer, Joseph Roswell Hawley, James Hammond Trumbull, and Charles Dudley Warner.
