Pedro Escudero y Echánove correspondence, 1845-1867.

Correspondence dated 1845-1867 concerning Mexican poitics, social reform, and legislative matters at the federal, state, and local levels. Twenty-two of the letters were written by Esudero y Echánove, ten of them to Mariano Riva Palacio. The single incoming letter, dated March 20, 1866, is from Pelagio Antonio de Labastida y Dávalos, Archbishop of Mexico, and concerns recent elections and political changes.

Politician. Born 1818 in Campeche; died 1897 in Mexico City. Liberal representative to the Constitutional Congress of 1856-1857 for the state of Yucatán. Escudero y Echánove later embraced the imperialist cause and was named Minnister of Justice by Maximilian in November, 1864. He retired to private life after the defeat of Maximilian.
