Papers include W. Earl Douglas's correspondence, writings, research materials, and other miscellaneous items. Handwritten and typescript correspondence between Douglas and newspaper editors and publishers, politicians, and other individuals includes letters submitting Douglas's columns for publication. Topics discussed in correspondence include politics, economics, the civil rights movement, trade-unions, South Africa, and Douglas's writings. Correspondents include Griffin Bell, Thomas R. Waring, Jesse Helms, James B. Edwards, William Loeb, and Theo Vorster. Douglas's writings include drafts for columns and speeches, newsletters, radio scripts, poems, and a pamphlet. Columns and other writings are arranged alphabetically by title and cover a wide variety of topics including affirmative action, apartheid, liberalism, minority youth unemployment, the Panama Canal, and racism. Topics for speeches include abortion and busing for school integration. A pamphlet is entitled "From 'Roots' to Reality." Journalist and columnist. Born in Chicago (Ill.), Douglas moved to Mt. Pleasant (S.C.) in 1968. Known as a conservative, he wrote columns for various newspapers including the "Union Leader" (Manchester, N.H.) and the "Charleston Chronicle" (Charleston, S.C.), an African American newspaper.
