Russell, a soldier in the 13th Illinois Infantry Regiment, to friends describing an expedition through Mississippi led by General Frederick Steele, Union objectives, destruction and confiscation of Confederate property, the attitude of Union soldiers toward contraband slaves, and the effect that Union confiscation of slaves had upon the Confederates.
