William Garvey papers. [manuscript]. 1913-1980. (bulk 1958-1972).

The William Garvey Papers consist of correspondence, publications, memorabilia, photographs, and photographic negatives. The material mostly concerns Garvey's career from 1958 to 1972 as a staff member of the United Steelworkers of America (staff representative, USWA 1941-1945; staff representative, USWA District 31, Chicago, 1946-1958; international staff representative and Midwestern editor of Steelabor, USWA Public Relations Department, Chicago 1958-1973). Garvey's activities as a founder and officer of the Illinois Labor History Society are also documented. Other significant subjects include: IWW Bisbee Deportation (including a manuscript by Philip Taft), Haymarket Square Riot, Memorial Day Massacre, Pullman Strike, Steel Workers Organizing Committee, and the Steelworkers international election of 1965 (manuscript by N. Woodie). The collection also contains over two thousand photographic negatives of USWA members involved in union activites such as organizing campaigns, strikes, conventions, local union meetings, and union social events. USWA members in their workplaces are also shown. Major correspondents and other figures in the collections include J. Germano, R. Gibbons, S. Evett, L. Orear, R. Pasnick, E. Sadlowksi, and R. Sarocco.
