Bridgett Demery Jackson Brister oral history interview, 1997.

Brister discusses her life in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, including attending grammar school, church bazaars, religious services, community involvement, returning to the church after years away, and connecting to her faith. She discusses the negative impact that the construction of Interstate 10 had on the parish community. Brister describes how the first African-American priest at St. Francis Xavier attracted young families and people from surrounding parishes. She notes the variation between traditional Catholic Masses and those that are more Afrocentric and discusses how the Church has changed over time to increase female participation and embrace Afrocentric themes. She discusses the partnership between St. Francis Xavier and St. Thomas More parishes, including their endeavors against racism and participation in political events.
