Coleman, a native of Springfield, Ill., attended Yale University, the University of Chicago, and Columbia University. He taught history at Butler College in Indianapolis from 1901 to 1919, and at Allegheny College from 1920 to 1924. He returned to Indianapolis in 1924 to serve as head of the Indiana Historical Bureau and also later the Indiana Historical Society. Jefferson Proving Ground was opened in May 1941 as an ammunition testing facility in Jefferson, Ripley, and Jennings Counties, Ind. Communities located on the testing site were moved, and efforts were made to preserve the history of the area. Charles E. Heberhart and Christopher B.
