Consisting of letters and receipts to Nagel's mother, Mary P. Nagel, chiefly re military service in or near vicinity of James Island, Pocotaligo, and Charleston, S.C., Madison, Fla., and various places. Also including letter, 25 Mar. 1859 [Charleston], to Mother, Summerville, [S.C.], re his dissatisfaction with relatives who required his attendance at dancing school, and an account of a large number of people attending the public hanging of a man for burglary, including a strong contingent of the Charleston Riflemen and the police. Civil War items include letter, 14 Jan. 1862, re camp life at James Island and meeting Gen. [Clement Anselm] Evans; letter, 12 Mar. 1862, Pocotaligo, S.C., re health conditions in the area, enjoying a satisfying diet, purchasing "capital pork from the country negroes" at ten cents per pound, and using "ground parched cow pease" in place of coffee. Letter, 20 Mar. 1862, re news of the draft in Charleston, an order from Richmond, Va., that substitutions would no longer be allowed among recruits, and the order's anticipated effect on troop morale; 14 May 1862, re Gens. [Roswell Sabine] Ripley and [States Rights] Gist and the Steamer Planter affair. Letter, 17 July 1863, re battle of Morris Island, including a diagram showing positions of Preston's Battery and location of the Pawnee, a Federal gunboat on the Stono River; and 31 May 1864, Secessionville [S.C.], re the improbability of a speedy end to the war in the face of the Union's extensive resources and manpower, and expressing doubts about the efforts of Confederate officials to obtain the support of European powers, because of the slavery issue.

Clement A. Evans (1833-1911) was a native of Stewart County, Georgia, and, before the Civil War, judge of that county's court and a Georgia state senator. During the war he served with the Army of Northern Virginia as brigadier general and, in November 1864, as division commander and acting major general in John B. Gordon's Corps. After the war he became a Methodist minister, retiring in 1892. He served on the state board of prison commissioners, and wrote diligently about the war. ...
