Watson Colt Allis was born in Topsfield, Massachusetts in 1857. As a young man, Allis became interested in the whaling and sealing industries and joined a whaling expedition to the Arctic Circle. His ship was caught in the ice and he nearly lost his life. Later he was active as a sealer and was associated with the North American Commercial Company and the Alaska Commercial Company. W.C. (Watson Colt) Allis worked for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Bureau of Fisheries. He resided primarily in the Pribilof Islands. He took part in a life-threatening whaling expedition in the Arctic Circle in which the ship was frozen in the ice. He also worked for the North American Commercial Co. and the Alaska Commercial Co. Watson was nicknamed the "Dean of Sealers" because of his expertise on the subject of seals and seal life. He died in St. Helena, CA, April 7, 1942. From the ...
