Consisting of correspondence from Leland re his early career, family news, and local conditions in S.C., Letter, 16 Aug. 1828 (Charleston, S.C.), to Eliza Leland Adams (Bangor, Maine), re outbreaks of Spanish fever and yellow fever, recalling family associations, and describing his family in S.C.; copy of letter 22 Aug. 1836, Columbia, S.C., to the Rev. R[ichard] C. Ketchum, Augusta, Ga., informing Ketchum of Leland's discussion with [Job] Johnston of Newberry District, S.C., re Johnston's efforts to establish a new Presbyterian church in the area "where heretofore the Seceders have occupied the ground to the exclusion of our denomination" and relaying Johnston's request that Ketchum "supply our church for two or three Sabbaths." Unsigned letter, 6 Apr. 1838 (Columbia, S.C.), to John L. Boazer (Lancaster, Ohio), re the disposition of property near Athens, Ohio, held in the name of Joseph Dana and under mortgage to the Edgar estate but originally purchased by Dana as agent for Leland and others. Later materials consist of 2 letters, 1844 and 1845, in which Leland attempts to reestablish contact with relatives still living in his hometown of Peru, Mass.; letter, 1 July 1844, to Electra Pierce and Polly Phillips Butts, in which Leland updates his nieces re his nine his children, ages 12 to 34, who were then living in South Carolina and Alabama, and lamenting that only 3 of his 9 children had made a profession of faith. Letter, Mar. 1845, from AWL in Columbia, S.C., to Polly Butts [Mrs. Nathaniel Butts], Peru, Mass., commenting on her reports of the small number of members in her local church who take communion, expressing regret for behavior during his youth, noting that "it seemed highly improbable when I came to this hot sickly region nearly 40 years ago, that I should survive so long ..." and attributing his longevity to "strict temperance."
