Incorporated in 1906 under the laws of the state of Washington (as the Inland Empire Railway Company, renamed later that year), the company purposed to take over four railroad properties: Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Railroad Company Ltd., Spokane Traction Company, Spokane and Inland Railway Company, and Spokane Terminal Company. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
