Formed as a joint-stock company in 1854 (to lay out the city of St. Peter in Nicollet County), it was incorporated in 1856 under the laws of the territory of Minnesota as the Saint Peter Company. The company--a driving force in attempting to move the state capital from St. Paul to St. Peter--closed its affairs to the public (but did not disincorporate) in 1865. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
